PURPOSE: To demonstrate scattering of light and polarization of scattered light.
DESCRIPTION: A bright point light source with condenser lens and iris is directed through a polarizer and a tank of water onto a screen. Stirring a tiny bit of soap solution into the water causes scattering from the soap molecules. The polariz ation of the scattered light can be demonstrated by rotating a polaroid sheet in the incoming light. Putting in a few drops of soap solution at a time, the sunset experiment can be slowly carried out. Or very quickly, if you put in too much soap.
SUGGESTIONS:
EQUIPMENT: Bright point source with condenser and iris, mounted polaroid, water tank with mirror, screen, and soap solution.
SETUP TIME: 10 min.
