Equipment and setup

  • Equipments involved in this experiments are: Spring, support stand, stop watch, meter stick, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 kg masses, paper clip (See Figure 1).
  • To read the position of the spring easily, place a paper clip pointer on the end of the spring (Figure 2).
  • The stopwatcher program is located in the lab folder on the desktop. An online one can be found here.

TA Notes
  • Perform the experiment ahead of time!
  • If a pointer is used, make sure it is not dragging on the meter stick when the spring oscillates.
  • You may wish to remind the students the difference between the length displacement of the spring.
