Equipment and setup

  • Equipments used in this experiment are: Electroscope, acrylic rod (thick, flat, clear plexiglass), acetate strip (thin, flat, clear), vinyl strip (thin, flat, dark), nylon rod (round, solid), PVC tube (white, hollow polyvinyl chloride), wool cloth, matches (see Figure 1).
  • Check the electroscope and straw before the lab to see if they work properly (see Figure 2). You may need to make some new ones for replacement.
  • When using and storing the equipments, avoid moisture and keep them dry.

TA Notes
  • Perform the experiment ahead of time!
  • Tell the students to recharge the electroscope if necessary.
  • Don't burn the electroscope plate in part III.
  • Ground the electroscope before you start doing the next part of the experiment.
